This course introduces the learner to key aspects of the estimator role. The student will learn about the practical applications of the estimator’s workflow as well the soft skills required for effective communication with co-workers, customers and insurance company representatives. An effective estimator possesses good communication and people skills, which are more subjective in nature. In the field, estimators devote a majority of their time not in obtaining the estimate, but in artfully negotiating complex personal interactions. An estimator must be emotionally intelligent and deft in communicating with coworkers, the insurance company, and the customer.

Thriving Against Internet Pricing: 2017 and Beyond
Shopping on the internet is a way of life, and many of the services shop owners provide are becoming a commodity in the minds of shoppers unfamiliar with the profession. The ease of shopping via “smart phone” or tablet makes selling parts at competitive prices way more difficult than in the recent past. Improved vehicle quality and growth of electronics means that parts sold per driven mile is declining. As some people keep their vehicles longer, repairs on those vehicles may be less profitable. For example, installing an engine or transmission: the invoice may be higher than average, but the profit per repair hour is lower, while expenses remain the same or even rise. The two best ways to stop losses, restore and dramatically improve net profit are to improve shop efficiency and employ labor intensive, diagnostic recovery rates and factors that allow you to sell parts at cost without raising your standard labor rate. By knowing what your average gross profit per billed hour is, you know how much profit you lose on low gross profit repairs. You restore the gross profit by selling parts at cost, using a labor intensive (LI) or diagnostic recovery rates (DRR) and factors and menu price the job. This class will show you exactly how to do this and provide a free tool that will do the calculations for you. Then implement and watch your profits soar.

Engine Misfire Diagnostics
This seminar will use case studies to help drivability technicians streamline their diagnostic approach to common yet difficult to diagnose engine performance concerns. Emphasis will be on scan tool data interpretation of fuel trim parameters used to identify and solve engine performance problems. Several cause and effect relationships will be discussed that lead to lean and rich engine running faults, exhaust sensor (O2 and Air: Fuel) faults and engine misfire concerns of all types, including variable valve timing related faults.

This seminar will cover:

• Air: Fuel sensor operation and testing
• Variable valve timing
• Pressure transducer waveform analysis
• How to diagnose fuel trim DTCs (P0171/P0174 – P0172/P0175) in a timely manner
• Volumetric efficiency testing to validate engine breathing concerns and sensor input accuracy

Scan It!
This class will cover the evolution of scan tools from the early days of OBD 1 to the present time of OBD 2. It will cover the many features that scan tools have to offer today such a Codes, Data, System Tests and Functional Procedures. There is a reason why I use 20+ factory scan tools on board my mobile diagnostic center to provide tech support for 1,500 shops in Northern NJ and there will be many comparisons to help you better understand the differences. There will also be discussions on the differences between OBD 2 Generic and OBD 2 OEM and how to utilize both worlds when diagnosing a vehicle. The class will cover the differences between reprogramming, coding, reconfiguring, relearning, recalibrating and Initializing controllers that require these separate procedures that scan tools must perform when replacing a dead battery on a car or simply introducing a new controller on board. Simply programming a controller on board with new software is only part of the picture. This will be a class that will help you to better understand the scan tool in your shop and how to get the most out of it then simply using it as a code extractor or data viewer. Using Current Probes to Diagnose Drivability Dilemmas
Inductive current probes have been around for years, even the venerable VAT40 charging/starting systems tester had one! Current probes use induction and “clamp” around a wire which gives us a non-intrusive method of viewing current flow in a circuit. These tools are not just for checking starting and charging system anymore. Coupling these tools with the modern DSO, or lab scope, they are incredibly powerful diagnostic instruments!

Current probes can be used for checking engine mechanical integrity, ignition and injection system operation, active wheel speed sensors, shorted engine sensors, parasitic draws and even for network diagnostics. Current probe tooling options and techniques will be discussed in this class. Case studies will support some interesting approaches to some unique diagnostic dilemmas. One is only limited by ones’ imagination and creativity when it comes to this affordable and often underappreciated tool.

Bridging the Gap Between OEM and the Aftermarket: The Role of the NASTF and How You Can Benefit From It
OEMs and independent aftermarket service technicians need each other more now than ever before. The average age of the U.S. vehicle population is almost 12 years, more than 85% of it is out-of-warranty, at least half is not owned by the original owner, and the number of franchise service bays across the U.S. are fewer this decade than last. The OEM’s brand image depends on the lifetime experience of the customer, not just satisfaction through the warranty period. Meanwhile in the aftermarket, independent technicians, tool-makers, information service providers and educators need OEM service information to enable their support of the OEM’s goal of lifetime satisfaction with the brand. The National Automotive Service Task Force (NASTF) is where OEMs and techs connect, a not-for-profit effort to cut through the red tape to find solutions that make the aftermarket “service-ready” in the complex technologies of today’s auto repair. Attend this interactive session to discover, reveal and discuss solutions to service information access.

What You Need to Know about Telematics and Emerging Vehicle Technology
What are the technologies vehicle manufacturers are investing in, and what are the key drivers for those technologies? What about the connected car? And where is the autonomous vehicle?  Which technologies are gaining traction, and which will be forgotten by next year? In other words, which should my company and I be paying attention to so that we can deliver the goods needed to support them? This discussion gives an overview of our industry and related topics as we explore technologies being developed and released across the globe.

In this session you’ll learn the answers to these questions:
  • What coming technologies do I need to know about as a shop owner, manager, or technician?
  • How will those coming vehicle technologies impact me?
  • What do I need to do to be ready for them?

Of course, when it comes to game-changing technologies, none have the potential to disrupt the auto care industry more in the coming years than telematics. The often misunderstood and rapidly evolving technology has the potential to drive business for shops, especially as it relates to vehicle diagnostics. This session will also explain what telematics means in relation to the auto care industry and what OE and aftermarket offerings are available. It will cover the major challenges the technology presents and most importantly, the big opportunities telematics creates for repairers.
