Technician Shortage... How to Fix the Problem
After attending many seminars about hiring, we still find ourselves short-handed. The problem is real and getting worse. It is essential that we learn how to get along with the techs we have. Our collision industry, for better or worse, has some difficult people in our midst. The stress related to the shop environment, customers getting lost in technology and good staff in short supply, adds some real challenges for the shop owner and technician. This seminar is for all involved: owners, spouses, managers, techs and support staff. It takes a close look at what the shop owner needs to be successful and looks at the same problems through the eyes of the technician, spouse and staff.

This course introduces the learner to key aspects of the estimator role. The student will learn about the practical applications of the estimator’s workflow as well the soft skills required for effective communication with co-workers, customers and insurance company representatives. In the field, estimators devote a majority of their time not in obtaining the estimate, but in artfully negotiating complex personal interactions. An estimator must be emotionally intelligent and deft in communicating with coworkers, the insurance company, and the customer.

Reprogramming With J2534
Today there are two to three options for programming or reprograming modules on vehicles. In the aftermarket, most shops and technicians cannot afford to purchase all the dealer tools or even an AutoLogic for European vehicles. There is an alternative: the Drew Tech/ Launch/Snap-On/ Bosch J2534 reprograming box. This class will focus on using the J2534 box to reprogram vehicles in the aftermarket. The class will provide all the necessary steps to follow, some simple and some not so simple. With so many different OE websites and different procedures, any step that is not followed will waste time and cost you money. The class will cover: OE websites, what software to have and NOT have on your laptop, how to sign up to obtain a user name and password, installing Tool Box from Drew Tech, how to update your J2534 software, updating the firmware, finding the correct computer information, what battery maintainer to use, how to look up information, how to prevent module/computer failure, when to program and much more. This class will provide you with information on what you need to know about J2534 programming in order to keep you out of trouble.

Unlocking Fuel Trims: The Analysis of Fuel Trim Corrections for Drivability Diagnostics
Being able to analyze total fuel trim correction in different fuel cells will help point your diagnostics in the right direction. Since the fuel trim correction factors are based on the O2 reading, we need to understand O2 functionality and confirm that they are working well first. For this reason, we will cover the different types of O2 sensors - Zirconia, Titan and LAF - and how to test them quickly.

The technician also needs to understand the impact if the PCM is using a speed density (MAP) type or MAF calculation process; this will have an impact on fuel trim correction factor. We will cover the difference between both and how it will impact the corrections base on engine load or volume efficiency.

The knowledge you will acquire during this training will help you save time and avoid doing long and unnecessary testing.

Diagnosing Today's Ignition Systems
This class will use a variety of different case studies to focus on learning techniques to diagnose and repair ignition-related faults that lead to common misfire-related diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) responsible for illuminating the Check Engine light. Emphasis will be placed on using diagnostic test equipment to pinpoint and validate the root cause of the problem. We will also discuss misfire concerns that do not set off the Check Engine light. Many intermittent misfire concerns are not regular enough to fail the OBD misfire monitor, so we will expand on tests that can be used to isolate these trying misfires.

This class will cover:

• Use of scan tool information to aid in diagnostics of misfire codes – P0300s
• Lab scope setup and analysis of ignition waveforms of all types
• Mode 6 (OBD-II) diagnostic overview
• How to interpret and analyze critical ignition input signals
• How to avoid replacing parts that are not the problem
• Recognize different manufacturers’ operational strategies during misfire conditions

Elevating Service Excellence and How Productivity Mathematics Measures Service Results
The trade days are over as the right processes required today in a shop elevate the industry to a profession. Productivity measurement as a TEAM starts to tell us where the client service problems are. Shop management can get sidetracked when they only focus on individual productivity measurement within their business. This is not to say that it is not important, however; individual measurement, known as proficiency measurement, is excellent for counseling an individual technician staff member to improve themselves. But what about the TEAM productivity measurement as a whole and the effect on the business?

Measuring the entire shop as a team can help direct management to the necessary attention to certain processes that are failing. When processes fail, client service levels decrease dramatically and net income disappears. It also tells us much more. This specific measurement is called “Site Efficiency” and what it reveals is amazing.

Understanding QuickBooks for the Service Industry: The Right Way
This program is designed to provide any QuickBooks user in the Automotive Service Repair Industry better guidance as to how to properly use QuickBooks as a great accounting tool. Automotive service business owners and bookkeepers should attend.

Whether you interface with a management system or not, QuickBooks can be set up to give great financial support for your business, but only if you use it correctly. Too often without proper setup, training, and review of data, the information in QuickBooks is deemed unreliable at best.

This overview workshop will provide key setup and procedural explanations to ensure you will be able to get what you are looking for in your accounting system.

Your specific questions can be e-mailed directly to the instructor before and after the session at: QuickBooks@aeii.net. These may be used for discussion purposes as well in the session if appropriate.

Much of what is covered will also apply to the collision segment as well, but examples will be automotive service industry specific.

Integrating Repair Information into Your Diagnostic Strategy
In this session, you’ll learn to use repair information systems – like Mitchell 1’s ProDemand – to improve your diagnostic strategy. Get tips that will help you diagnose and repair vehicles faster and more confidently while maximizing your repair information subscriptions in conjunction with your handheld diagnostic platforms.

Other topics that will be covered:
  • Leveraging resources you already pay for – like scan tools and repair information – for profitable diagnostics.
  • Optimizing the use of information, from the customer to the scan tool to information research to completion. Maximizing time spent researching before repairing.
  • With the changing role of the technician and dependence on service advisor or manager to collect information from the customer, how to gather the right facts early in the diagnostic process.
  • How to get the most out of the evolving information resources – including both OEM and expert content – and diagnostic tools with imbedded information and where these products are headed.
  • Taking advantage of real-world repair information that goes beyond traditional OEM sources. Leaning on industry experience in addition to your own.
  • Perfecting the “complaint, cause, correction” methodology to ensure a proper diagnosis.

Electronic Transmission Diagnostics
Transmissions are controlled by the engine control system and use many of the same sensors, and the sensors used in the transmission should be familiar to drivability technicians. Many transmission symptoms might be caused by engine controls. You must be able to determine if the problem is in the engine or the transmission. Many drivability technicians have the diagnostic equipment and the skills necessary to diagnose these problems and make the repair. Don’t let these opportunities pass you by. In this class you will learn to determine if the engine or the transmission is causing the symptom you are experiencing. Popular electronic inputs and outputs will also be covered. Learn strategies and repairs that can be made without transmission removal and disassembly. Learn common failure items for popular transmissions and stop turning these jobs away.

Transmission Diagnostics for the Non-Transmission Technician
Transmissions have been controlled by computers for a long time. As a result, transmission issues can be electrical or hydraulic/mechanical in nature. When a vehicle with a transmission issue rolls into a shop it is often “shipped” to a transmission shop. Why? A perfectly capable technician who can accurately diagnose an engine issue could tackle the transmission issue. Why lose the customer? This course outlines a logical process for attacking transmission failures. Using tools and techniques that drivability technicians already possess, we will discuss how to draw the line between an electrical problem or an internal transmission issue. Basic knowledge of automatic transmissions is a plus, but this course is geared towards non-transmission technicians.

Thriving Against Internet Pricing: 2017 and Beyond
Shopping on the internet is a way of life, and many of the services shop owners provide are becoming a commodity in the minds of shoppers unfamiliar with the profession. The ease of shopping via “smart phone” or tablet makes selling parts at competitive prices way more difficult than in the recent past. Improved vehicle quality and growth of electronics means that parts sold per driven mile is declining. As some people keep their vehicles longer, repairs on those vehicles may be less profitable. For example, installing an engine or transmission: the invoice may be higher than average, but the profit per repair hour is lower, while expenses remain the same or even rise. The two best ways to stop losses, restore and dramatically improve net profit are to improve shop efficiency and employ labor intensive, diagnostic recovery rates and factors that allow you to sell parts at cost without raising your standard labor rate. By knowing what your average gross profit per billed hour is, you know how much profit you lose on low gross profit repairs. You restore the gross profit by selling parts at cost, using a labor intensive (LI) or diagnostic recovery rates (DRR) and factors and menu price the job. This class will show you exactly how to do this and provide a free tool that will do the calculations for you. Then implement and watch your profits soar.

This class will cover the evolution of scan tools from the early days of OBD 1 to the present time of OBD 2. It will cover the many features that scan tools have to offer today such a Codes, Data, System Tests and Functional Procedures. There is a reason why I use 20+ factory scan tools on board my mobile diagnostic center to provide tech support for 1,500 shops in Northern NJ and there will be many comparisons to help you better understand the differences. There will also be discussions on the differences between OBD 2 Generic and OBD 2 OEM and how to utilize both worlds when diagnosing a vehicle. The class will cover the differences between reprogramming, coding, reconfiguring, relearning, recalibrating and Initializing controllers that require these separate procedures that scan tools must perform when replacing a dead battery on a car or simply introducing a new controller on board. Simply programming a controller on board with new software is only part of the picture. This will be a class that will help you to better understand the scan tool in your shop and how to get the most out of it then simply using it as a code extractor or data viewer. Using Current Probes to Diagnose Drivability Dilemmas
Inductive current probes have been around for years, even the venerable VAT40 charging/starting systems tester had one! Current probes use induction and “clamp” around a wire which gives us a non-intrusive method of viewing current flow in a circuit. These tools are not just for checking starting and charging system anymore. Coupling these tools with the modern DSO, or lab scope, they are incredibly powerful diagnostic instruments!

Current probes can be used for checking engine mechanical integrity, ignition and injection system operation, active wheel speed sensors, shorted engine sensors, parasitic draws and even for network diagnostics. Current probe tooling options and techniques will be discussed in this class. Case studies will support some interesting approaches to some unique diagnostic dilemmas. One is only limited by ones’ imagination and creativity when it comes to this affordable and often underappreciated tool.

Bridging the Gap Between OEM and the Aftermarket: The Role of the NASTF and How You Can Benefit From It
OEMs and independent aftermarket service technicians need each other more now than ever before. The average age of the U.S. vehicle population is almost 12 years, more than 85% of it is out-of-warranty, at least half is not owned by the original owner, and the number of franchise service bays across the U.S. are fewer this decade than last. The OEM’s brand image depends on the lifetime experience of the customer, not just satisfaction through the warranty period. Meanwhile in the aftermarket, independent technicians, tool-makers, information service providers and educators need OEM service information to enable their support of the OEM’s goal of lifetime satisfaction with the brand. The National Automotive Service Task Force (NASTF) is where OEMs and techs connect, a not-for-profit effort to cut through the red tape to find solutions that make the aftermarket “service-ready” in the complex technologies of today’s auto repair. Attend this interactive session to discover, reveal and discuss solutions to service information access.

Ever feel like you have a revolving door for employees? Do you fear hiring new employees because at least with your current staff, you know what you have? Not sure how to attract the right applicants? Or wonder why the quality people did not stay?

Probably one of the most important and least understood aspects of business is talent acquisition. Learn to be more successful in attracting qualified applicants when you improve your employment ads, job applications, candidate assessments, and interviews.

Good talent management extends the life cycle of an employee by creating an environment and culture that breeds success. Create expectations with job descriptions based on job activities, and implement a two-way review process for employee and employer.

What You Need to Know about Telematics and Emerging Vehicle Technology
What are the technologies vehicle manufacturers are investing in, and what are the key drivers for those technologies? What about the connected car? And where is the autonomous vehicle?  Which technologies are gaining traction, and which will be forgotten by next year? In other words, which should my company and I be paying attention to so that we can deliver the goods needed to support them? This discussion gives an overview of our industry and related topics as we explore technologies being developed and released across the globe.

In this session you’ll learn the answers to these questions:
  • What coming technologies do I need to know about as a shop owner, manager, or technician?
  • How will those coming vehicle technologies impact me?
  • What do I need to do to be ready for them?

Of course, when it comes to game-changing technologies, none have the potential to disrupt the auto care industry more in the coming years than telematics. The often misunderstood and rapidly evolving technology has the potential to drive business for shops, especially as it relates to vehicle diagnostics. This session will also explain what telematics means in relation to the auto care industry and what OE and aftermarket offerings are available. It will cover the major challenges the technology presents and most importantly, the big opportunities telematics creates for repairers.

Thriving Against Internet Pricing: 2017 and Beyond
Shopping on the internet is a way of life, and many of the services shop owners provide are becoming a commodity in the minds of shoppers unfamiliar with your profession. The ease of shopping via “smart phone” or tablet makes selling parts at competitive prices way more difficult than in recent past. Improved vehicle quality and growth of electronics means that parts sold per driven mile is declining. As some people keep their vehicles longer, repairs on those vehicles may be less profitable. For example, installing an engine or transmission. The invoice may be higher than average, but the profit per repair hour is lower, while expenses remain the same or even rise. Vin’s session will show you exactly how to do this and provide a free tool that will do the calculations for you. Then implement and watch your profits soar.

Diagnostic Strategies
This class will focus on top case studies that John Anello has collected in the field. They will cover different operating systems of the vehicle and not just on one subject. These case studies were selected from vehicles diagnosed over the past 10 years that bring valuable information to the table.

With the introduction of as many as 60+ controllers on today's vehicles, it is important for this class to give students a wide spectrum of problems on a vehicle to help them better understand that a good diagnostic game plan can be applied to each and every system by simply knowing and understanding the foundation of on-board computers. Each case study will provide a strategy of approach to resolve each issue and will be coupled with theory of operation to help the students better understand how a system works when building a plan of attack.

This is not a "Tip & Tricks" class but more of a class on "how did I get there?" The instructor will focus on ways to utilize different types of equipment in your shop to test and probe vehicles as well as introduce newer test equipment that may help you better expedite the diagnostic process. If you eat, drink and sleep diagnostics, then this class is for you!

Essential Diagnostics: The Steps You Need to Take In Tackling Every Drivability & Electrical Concern
This class takes a critical thinking or logical approach to address many of the issues that face techs every day - working on systems that are new to them or that they have little or no experience diagnosing. The course is a mix of critical thinking, theory, diagnostic testing methods, tooling and real-world case studies. Four areas will be addressed: mechanical testing, fuel trim diagnostics, ignition testing and network communication issues. Graphing scan data, archiving data and other useful diagnostic software will be discussed. Lots of real-world, not-so-forward case studies will be used to illustrate these processes and techniques.
• See how you can diagnose each type of problem with both basic tools and high tech tools.
• Learn how to figure out what to do next in your diagnostic process.
• See what your results should be and where to go next.
• See a quick review of the “Flatrater” test drive and how to gather information.

Order takers don’t make sales. Order takers sound rushed, usually answer questions with yes or no and seldom ask questions.

A sales maker will master the art of listening, take whatever time is necessary to present a solution, be prepared to address objections and always ask for the sale.

Sales is never about price. You can only be compared on price when you fail to present a better value. A sales maker will differentiate their solutions from their competitors and provide a better value.

Understanding QuickBooks for the Service Industry: The Right Way
This 90-minute program is designed to provide any QuickBooks user in the Automotive Service Repair Industry better guidance as to how to properly use QuickBooks as a great accounting tool.

Your specific questions can be e-mailed directly to the instructor before and
after the session at: QuickBooks@aeii.net. These may be used for discussion
purposes as well in the session if appropriate.

Much of what is covered will also apply to the collision segment as well, but examples
will be automotive service industry specific.

Using Ignition Waveforms to Uncover Drivability Causes
In this presentation, Jim Morton from Morton’s Automotive Technical Services will show the technician all of the valuable information there is in an ignition waveform, both primary and secondary. Morton feels this is becoming a dying art due to the problems and cost of secondary adapters. Also, most techs that try to use this information only know and use the firing KV and maybe the burntime. There is an unbelievable amount of information in the Spark KV, Dwell and the condenser/coil oscillation areas. Join us and look at what the ignition pattern is trying to tell us.

Diagnose and Repair Vehicle Networks
Late model vehicles have an amazing amount of computers onboard, networked together using different protocols and configurations. A single sensor fault may set codes in multiple modules since the data is being shared over the network. Communication faults will often generate the dreaded "U" codes and at times a scan tool will not communicate with the vehicle at all. Attend this class to become proficient at solving communications problems. You will learn about:

  • Streamlined network diagnosis
  • Solving communications faults
  • Diagnosing and repairing "U" codes
  • Testing form the DLC
  • Different network types

Diagnosing Today's Ignition Systems
This seminar will use a variety of different case studies to focus on learning techniques to diagnose and repair ignition-related faults that lead to common misfire-related diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) responsible for illuminating the Check Engine light.

This seminar will cover:

  • Use of scan tool information to aid in diagnostics of misfire codes – P0300s
  • Lab scope setup and analysis of ignition waveforms of all types
  • Mode 6 (OBD-II) diagnostic overview
  • How to interpret and analyze critical ignition input signals
  • How to avoid replacing parts that are not the problem
  • Recognize different manufacturers’ operational strategies during misfire conditions
